TEN RULES FOR EFFECTIVE GRASSROOTS ADVOCACY
By David C. Gessel
1.Don't be afraid of your legislators
2.Research your legislator's background and
interests
3.Socialize with your legislators
4.Contribute time and money to your
legislators campaigns -
$10-$20 goes a long ways
5.Always be honest - tell the other side also
6.Learn to think how the legislature thinks
-(They want to be
liked and relected)
7.Start early in educating legislators on
your issues
8.During the legislative sessions, keep your
calls and letters
focused and brief - (one or two minutes)
9.Don't burn any bridges
10.Coordinate with others working on your
issues - it only 2
or 3 calls from different people to a legislator to sway them
