Seeking the Big Prize
By Barbara Zeiger
"We are going for Chapter of the Year," says Utah Chapter's President
Elect Paul Keoppel, compliance administrator with IHC Laboratory
Services,
Salt Lake City, site of the 2002 Winter Olympics and the 2003 CLMA
Annual
Conference and Exhibition.
One of Utah Chapter's achievements is its web site, one of six chapter
web
sites you can link to from CLMA's homepage (www.clma.org). Keoppel says
Utah Chapter's web site is "a work in progress," designed along the
lines
of the qualifying requirements for Chapter of the Year. Creatively
formatted to capture the flavor of the state's environs, the site
features
the chapter's outstanding newsletter and a large section on health-care
policy. "We have letters to and from Congress and details on CLIA's
exemption on POLs, the initial focus of Utah Chapter's health-care
policy."
The health-care policy section offers site visitors a choice of 13
policy-related links, including negotiated rulemaking, the current
Federal
Register, the Utah Hospital and Health Services Advocacy page, and
suggestions for statewide lobbying. It also provides relevant (and
proud!)
announcements-- for example, member Dr. Ron Weiss of ARUP is serving on
the Utah Medicare Carrier Advisory Committee, which reviews policies
before they are published as notices by the local carrier.
Another site section gives information regarding the big spring meeting.
Utah Chapter cosponsors (with the Utah Society for Clinical Laboratory
Sciences) a regional annual conference in the spring. Set in beautiful
Ogden, this year's March 8-9 meeting celebrates the 20th century.
Applying for Chapter of the Year recognition has been an exciting
experience for everyone involved in the process. They feel the process
of
compiling and documenting chapter efforts in the 10 criteria has made
them
stronger as a chapter. The deadline for Chapter of the Year entries is
April 5.
